Emergency First Aid at Work
Aims
- To promote knowledge and confidence in providing emergency first aid to individuals who become injured or ill in the workplace.
- To equip participants with the skills necessary to handle a variety of emergency first aid situations and/or assume the role of emergency first aider in the workplace.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Effectively manage an unresponsive casualty.
- Perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
- Utilize an AED (automated external defibrillator).
- Provide assistance in cases of choking.
- Manage shock.
- Treat wounds and bleeding.
- Effectively address minor injuries.

- Legal and moral responsibilities of first aiders
- Assessment of the Casualty
- Recognizing an emergency situation
- Conducting a primary survey
- Performing a secondary survey
- Managing an Unresponsive Casualty
- Positioning an unresponsive casualty
- Checking for breathing and circulation
- Initiating CPR if necessary
- Using an AED if available
- Choking
- Identifying choking signs and symptoms
- Administering abdominal thrusts for adults
- Performing the Heimlich maneuver for children and infants
- Shock
- Recognizing the signs and symptoms of shock
- Positioning a casualty in shock
- Maintaining warmth and comfort for the casualty
- Seeking medical attention promptly
- Wounds and Bleeding
- Types of wounds and their management
- Controlling bleeding using direct pressure
- Applying bandages and dressings
- Seeking medical attention for severe wounds
- Minor Injuries
- Treating common workplace injuries, such as cuts, scrapes, and sprains
- Applying cold compresses for pain and swelling
- Elevating injured limbs
- Monitoring the casualty for signs of worsening condition
Practical Sessions
- Hands-on practice of CPR, AED use, and choking relief techniques
- Simulation of various emergency first aid scenarios
- Demonstration of wound dressing and bandage application
- Role-playing to enhance communication and decision-making skills
Assessment
- Informal quiz-style Q&A sessions
- Practical demonstration of first aid skills in simulated scenarios
